Adult Adoptee Says: I’m Thankful They Gave Me Life

My name is Devereaux, I’m from Georgia and I was adopted when I was 3 days old.

I’ve always known that I was adopted. My mom said she would stand over my crib and say things like “we are so glad we adopted you” and “we love you so much”. We read books about being adopted growing up and often talked about adoption…It’s always part of my story and I’m so thankful for that!

Growing up I always felt like I was wanted. I thought it was neat that my story was different than most of my friends. When people told me that I looked like one of my parents, we would just laugh and say thanks. It was a little like having an inside joke with my parents. It was such a normal thing to me because my parents were so open about my adoption that I really didn’t think about it much.

My feelings toward my adoptive parents are ones of great love and gratitude. I’m so thankful they loved me and were open with me about being adopted. I have never felt different or insecure because I’m adopted. I have always felt wanted and loved by my parents and by my birth mom. I have a new appreciation about the adoption process and the waiting they experienced before they got me because my husband and I adopted out 3 child in 2015.

If I could talk to my birth parents, I would want them to know that I am so thankful that they gave me life. I’m thankful that, for whatever their reasons, they made an adoption plan for me that set the course for my life. I thank God for them and pray for them often, they are the reason I’m here.

My advice for people out there considering adoption is that adoption isn’t a second choice in building a family. Adoption is a beautiful gift for everyone involved. It’s purposeful, life-changing, and can glorify God.
