Be Who You Is...

“Be who you is, because if you ain’t who you is, then you is who you ain’t.” This is one of my favorite Brennan Manning quotes, and it has echoed in my life on many occasions. So often I have tried to make my life look exactly like someone who I admire. This usually ends in disappointment and feelings of inadequacy, but then I am reminded, every so gently, that I am not that person; I am not supposed to be that person. I am supposed to be me. This is a concept that is very close to the hearts of the Via family. Their story is infinitely beautiful, redemptive, and inspiring, but part of what makes it this way is that its THEIR story. God inscribed it on their hearts. They are being exactly who God wants them to be. Not everyone is called to move to the country that their child is from, but the Vias were. Not everyone is called to adopt a child with Down syndrome from Bulgaria, but the Eichers were. Not everyone is called to travel to Haiti every 3 months, with no end in sight, to see their son, but the Stewarts were. Not everyone is called to adopt oversees or even at all, but we are all called to care for orphans. What makes each of these stories so unique and inspiring is that God wrote each one specifically for the people that acted them out. We shouldn’t try to be these families, but instead find life and redemption in them as we pursue what God is writing on our hearts. What is your story? It may be very similar to one of these or very different. All I know is that beautiful things happen when God is holding the pen and you is who you is. -Nick-
